International Link Accomplishments 2006

  • ILink assisted 80 Workman’s Compensation Service Coordinators in improving their cross-cultural understanding by proving a multi-cultural panel presentation at their regional conference at the Grove Park Inn. Their feedback was excellent.
  • ILink secured an interpreting contract with the Buncombe County Health Center for a second year and provided full day interpreters when they were short staffed.
  • We began tutoring 30 new Slavic clients requesting ESL classes at their apartments as arranged through the generous interest of their apt. manager.
  • Through ILink’s support services, an average of 185 foreign born clients a month succeeded in overcoming language and cultural barriers to accessing information and services as they developed greater independence in navigating the systems.
  • An average of 25 interpreting and translation services a month enabled clients to communicate for doctor visits, on the job training, parent-teacher conferences.
  • 70 clients a month improved their communication skills through our English as a second language (ESL) tutoring program, meeting their goals to get better jobs, to speak with their children’s teachers and to improve their ability to access services.
  • ILink expanded our homework help program going to homes of 6 students.
  • 20 international children a month received homework help.
  • Teachers, employers, health care and human service providers became better equipped to serve their foreign born clientele through ILink’s support.
  • An average of 150 people a month improved cross-cultural understanding and communication through participation in ILink’s cultural and volunteer programs.
    • These include:
    • International Link’s 2nd annual International Dance Festival
    • multi-cultural panel presentations on improving cross-cultural awareness
    • educational cultural presentations for the College for Seniors, AB Tech and UNCA students
    • Russian, Spanish and French classes, tutoring and conversation hours with native speakers sharing their language and culture
  • ILink achieved these accomplishments with the committed support of a UNCA intern and 200 active volunteers which include our foreign born clients.
