Save money with early English assessments
Our ESL program offers 5 levels of English skill. We group students of similar English knowledge in each class. Each new student must take assessments to be enrolled in our English classes. If you take assessments before class starts, we will give a discount on book purchases.
Why do we assess English students?
We want you to succeed in your English language learning! And so this means we need to place you in the class that is the best fit for you based on assessment results rather than what you think may be the best. And your class fit does not only impact you: if you are not in a good class for your level it also makes it harder for your classmantes and your teachers. But we do still care what your sense of your own English abilities are…
The first assessment: your own assessment
Before we have you take the official assessments, we start by asking what you think of your English language abilities in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Part of our English class registration form asks you to give us an honest self-assessment of your English abilities.
Our main assessments
All of us have differences in our levels in the 4 language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing). And not all programs and levels are the same. So, even if you are a beginner, we need to test you. Please note: all students (including advanced students) who were enrolled last year must be assessed again this year. We are using a new curriculum and class levels are divided differently.
After you register, you will take our main assessment tests. This will take about 75 minutes and would be scheduled with us like a video appointment. You can do it any location that meets these requirements:
- A quiet place. You must be able to listen and speak without other distractions. You will have the best results if you take the assessment indoors and in a quiet room.
- You are alone. If a friend or family member helps you, you will need to re-take the assessments with us in person. It is very important that you be placed with students who have similar English skills. This makes it much easier for you to improve.
- Strong internet. If you are on a weak internet signal, it could hurt your test score.
Up to $15
Our teachers are volunteers and give their time because they care about you. This is what enables us to offer the weekly classes for free. But we must purchase the books from a publisher. This is why we have had to charge $35 for your student book.
If you take the assessments before ESL starts, we will discount your book charge. The earlier you complete these assessments, the more money you will save on your book. Which one of these would you like?

For a limited time, we are “testing our tests.” This means we are testing the assessment process to make sure it is accurate and effective. If you are willing to help us do this, we’ll give you an additional $10 off your books!
Here’s how: in addition to the 75 minute main assessment tests, you would take an additional 45 minutes of testing and questions.
